Are you looking to move interstate to the booming city of Melbourne? You aren’t alone. With a population growth rate around 2.7 percent, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. And Melbourne is projected to surpass Sydney for Australia’s largest city by 2026.
While some of this growth is coming from overseas, some if it is also interstate travel and relocation. So just where are these people moving to? A recent study by realestate.com.au provided some clarity.
Melbourne’s inner suburbs are the most popular with interstate buyers seeking property in Victoria — but a few curve balls are among the most searched.
Richmond is among the top 20 interstate suburbs plugged into realestate.com.au by users in Western Australia, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania, making it the Victorian spot with the widest appeal around the country.
Brunswick was also sought after by ACT and WA house hunters, with Toorak among the most searched in South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.
St Kilda was in Tasmania and WA’s top 20, but perhaps most surprisingly, Sunbury also had two mentions as among the most searched by ACT and New South Wales users.
Wangaratta and Wodonga were the only other Victorian places in NSW’s top 20.
Patterson Lakes was the most searched Victorian suburb by Tasmanian property seekers.
Tassie and WA had the most Victorian entrants to their top 20s, with eight each.
Realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Consibee said Melbourne was “not such a holiday destination” and “a lot (of searches) may be coming from people moving to those locations to live in” rather than those looking for their perfect summer or winter escape.
The data was collected from searches on realestate.com.au in the 12 months to January 31.
